在一個時常為白雪覆蓋的小鎮，有一幢昏黃孤寂的公寓，少年歐文（Kodi Smit-McPhee 飾）和離異的母親（Cara Buono 飾）居住於此。這個清秀的小男孩敏感怯懦，在學校時常受到別人的欺負，媽媽則篤信宗教，無暇他顧。歐文隻能躲在自己的小房間，通過望遠鏡窺視外邊的世界，或者扮作連環殺人狂，釋放心中的壓抑與憤怒。某個夜晚，美麗而神秘的可人艾比（Chlo? Grace Moretz 飾）搬入公寓，成為歐文的鄰居。這兩個共同擁有獨特氣質的孩子相互吸引，漸漸成為了好朋友。與此同時，小鎮上凶殺案件接連發生，歐文也無意中發現艾比身上令人難以置信的秘密……
